Patali calls for investment in sustainable development

Though economic growth is essential to Sri Lanka’s ongoing development, investing in sustainable development is even more important, Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said at the 110th Annual Sessions of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka yesterday.

“Sustainable development relies on three equally important pillars: economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social equality. And of course in the development vision of the Ministry of Megapolis, there is a fourth pillar, a fourth dimension, that is the happiness of the people,” Ranawaka said. To realise this vision of sustainable development, however, Sri Lanka will have to improve its scientific and technological capabilities. The Techno City and Science Park projects, along with other projects at the universities of Moratuwa and Colombo, will help the country’s citizens enhance their knowledge of technology. “There are certain core technologies that we want to improve, and these are nanotechnology, biotechnology, robotics, information and communication technology, advanced electronics, and space technologies,” added the Minister.

Minister Ranawaka also mentioned that plans to improve transportation and healthcare, along with Colombo’s infrastructure, would directly lead to heightened scientific expertise.

“Once the spatial transformation happens, the high tech transformation of our economy will certainly follow,” he said.
