President, PM will not compromise country

The President and the Prime Minister are making a genuine effort to steer the country towards development and prosperity by creating national and religious harmony. They would never take any decision harmful to the country or people, the Most Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter said. He stated this when Speaker of the National Council of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland Christa Markwalder called on him at his temple in Kandy yesterday.

The prelate said small extremist groups acting on political, religious and communal lines were common to any country and it was not a problem endemic to Sri Lanka only.

“The President and the Prime Minister are acting in a fair and just manner by identifying the needs of all communities and religions,” he said. He said most countries including Europe have established cordial relations with Sri Lanka today. The prelate said a statement made by the Northern Province Chief Minister led to a controversy recently.

The Mahanayake said it should not be taken seriously as communal minded groups were common in any country.

Markwalder said Buddhism had greatly helped to discipline people and create a peace loving society in Sri Lanka.

She said as a country which had decentralised the administrative system, Switzerland was closely watching the process of decentralisation of power in Sri Lanka.

She said the proposed new constitution would find answers to many problems and ills in the country. Markwalder said she admired the genuine effort made by the Sri Lanka leadership to introduce constitutional reforms. The Speaker who visited the Sri Dalada Maligawa and paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic also called on the Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanaratana Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter at his Asgiriya Temple.
