Judges’ phones not tapped, emails not hacked: Ruwan

Defence State Minister Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday refuted allegations that telephone lines of some judges were tapped and their emails hacked.

He said the former government tapped even telephone lines of opposition members adding that the present government does not endorse such action.

“We do not have any need to do so. As all are aware, after January 8 nothing of that sort happened. It is during the time of those who make such allegations such things took place,” he said answering a question raised by a journalist at a media briefing at the Defence Ministry yesterday.

“It is baseless to make such allegations without a complaint being lodged,” Wijewardene said.

“Law and Order and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayaka has also said that the Police could conduct an independent and comprehensive probe into allegations that telephones of some judges have been tapped and their emails hacked, if those making such accusations lodge complaints,” the minister said. Wijewardene said the government’s policy is to safeguard the independence and integrity of the judiciary at all times.

The state minister also stressed that the government will never allow efforts aimed at harming the integrity and independence of the judicial system.
