National Occupational Safety and Health Week begins today


The National Occupational Safety and Health Week - 2016 organised by the Labour Ministry, Labour Department and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health will be held from today to October 14.

"The week is implemented with the objective of generating a healthy work force by reducing occupation bound accidents and thereby improving national production," Labour Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne said.

He was addressing a press conference at the Government Information Department yesterday.

"The second week of October was designated as the 'National Occupational Safety and Health Week' by the Cabinet in 2009. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the Labour Ministry are commemorating this week with the participation of tripartite constituents with the objective of developing a safety culture in all work places island wide annually," the minister said.

"We emphasis on minimising occupational hazards in all work places and reduce absenteeism as a direct measure in improving productivity," he added.

The theme of the week is aligned with the concept 'Emerging Risks and investing on OSH' where it highlights the importance of occupational safety and health, occupational injury prevention, minimise absenteeism, OSH based innovations and to improve productivity in the economic development drive.

An international seminar on occupational safety and health will be held from October 10 to 12 at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo while the national seminar will be held on October 12 at the same venue parallel to this year's Occupational Safety Week celebration. The diploma awarding ceremony for the eight and ninth batches of students who successfully completed the occupational safety and health diploma will also take place on October 12 from 6.00 p.m. at Galadari Hotel.

Meanwhile, the national occupational safety and health award ceremony will be held on October 14 from 5.00 p.m. for the consecutive year at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre with President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest.
