SriLankan to add Gan Islands

SriLankan Airlines will add Gan Islands in the Maldives to their route network soon, SriLankan Airlines CEO Suren Ratwatte said.

SriLankan will thus become the first international airline to fly to this second airport of the Maldives. With several international hotel chains having resorts around Gan, the airline will have additional business.

Ratwatte said they are also planning to increase fights to London from 7 to 9 from November. “We have asked for a ‘double daily’ flight but we have not received the green light from Heathrow. The CEO said they are also looking at increasing frequency in the Asian region. “We foresee opportunities in the region on ‘short haul’ flights with short turnaround time”.

He also said they will not look at increasing frequencies to the Gulf. “There is a lot competition and we don’t think we could compete there”.

Mihin Lanka will be liquidated from November 1 and will be operated under the Sri Lankan branding. “This route will be operated as a civil service airline. We will increase frequency to some destinations including the Seychelles”. With the re branding of Mihin the fares and service levels will increase. “However we will not increase fares to ‘religious destinations like Baranas and Bodhgaya. (SS)
