Labour officers strike action without basis: Minister

Labour Minister W. D. J. Seneviratna alleged that the strike action launched by labour officers is bound to collapse since they do not have a basis for their strike.

“They keep on changing their slogans and hence it is clear that this strike action was launched without basis . This only hinders the progress of the poor workers, as this strike has paralysed the entire labour administrative system,” Seneviratna said.

The minister said so while addressing a media briefing at the Government Information Department on Wednesday.

"A service constitution was prepared by them and was presented to the Labour Commissioner General and the Ministry Secretary. However, they have proposed to increase their salary and wages to be on a par with the salary and wages of executive level officers of SL-01 level, which need 10 years of commendable service and passing of an examination as per the state administration circular 06/2006. Therefore, their demand will only give birth to a series of problems as the executive level officers will too demand for a salary increase,if the wages of labor officers are increased," he said.

“We also agreed to restructure the Labor Department within the next three months while taking into consideration the proposals put forward by the committee appointed for the restructure of the department. It is now clear that they do not have any intention to hold discussions with me or the state minister as we have compromised to the fullest level ”

However, I. C. Gamage President of State Labor Officers Association claimed that they do not demand for a salary increase but only proposed to the Minister to gain cabinet approval to make the service constitution.

“Our only mission is to frame the Service constitution which will safeguard the rights of our members. We are not begging for a salary increase. We are ever ready to extend our fullest support to the Minister if steps are taken to form the service constitution”

"The media had carried a story saying that the strike action was due to a grudge held between me and the minister which is completely wrong. We both are of the same stance in this issue. I invite all the Labour officers to report to work as we can resolve the issue if they report to work and participate in discussions,” State Minister of Labour Ravindra Samaraweerasaid.
