Kulasekara ‘shaken’, says fatal accident ‘unfortunate’

A source close to Sri Lankan cricketer Nuwan Kulasekara, involved in an accident this afternoon that rendered a twenty-eight year old motorist dead, said the former world No. 1 ranked Bowler was ‘visibly shaken’ by the incident.

In his statement to the Police, Kulasekara had said the motorist had been thrown onto his path as he was returning to Colombo from Gampaha via the Kandy – Colombo route.

The accident occurred close to the AG’s office, near the Kirillawella junction in Kadawatha.

Kulasekara said the motorcyclist had been travelling in the opposite direction, when he had overtaken a bus, crashed into the ‘bund’ in the middle of the road, and been thrown onto the path of Kulasekara’s vehicle.

Kulasekara had called the fatal accident ‘unfortunate’.

He was detained by Kadawatha Police, produced before the Mahara Magistrate and released on bail a short while ago.

Speaking to Daily News Online, a spokesperson for Sri Lanka Cricket said the body would assist Kulasekera in the legal process to follow, and will also seek to support him though what it termed an ‘undoubtedly a traumatic experience.’

Sri Lanka Cricket also offered its condolences to the bereaved family at the tragic loss of a young life.
