Appointment of members to OMP, RTI Commission: CC to meet next week

The Constitutional Council (CC) will sit next week to deliberate on the appointment of members to the Office of Missing Persons and Right To Information Commission, the Media Spokesman to the Speaker told the Daily News yesterday.

However, he said the exact date of the meeting would be fixed on Monday as Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is presently overseas.

The CC has been discussing on eligible candidates for the above two newly established bodies over the past weeks.

The chairmen and members of those bodies will be decided by the CC and sent to the President for approval and appointment. The RTI Bill was passed in Parliament on June 24 and the OMP Bill on August 11.

Meanwhile, back to back meetings of the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly have been scheduled next week. The Steering Committee will meet on three consecutive days starting from next Tuesday.

A Steering Committee member said it hopes to present the first draft of the new Constitution to the Constitutional Assembly before the end of this year.

Out of the six Sub-Committees appointed to deliberate on specific areas relating to the Constitution, five sub-committees had already presented their reports to the Steering Committee. The report of Finance Sub-Committee headed by MP Bandula Gunawardena is to be submitted shortly.
