Work on the three new steel flyovers at Welikada junction in Rajagiriya, Ganemulla and Polgahawela is progressing rapidly. The flyovers will ease traffic congestion and avoid delays experienced by motorists.
Road Development Authority (RDA) project director Piyal Warnakulasooriya told the Daily News that piling work for the construction of the three flyovers is currently in progress.
He said the Rajagiriya flyover will be constructed in two phases.
"This is an urgent need due to the heavy traffic congestion experienced any time of the day in the area. The project will help ease traffic congestion at Sri Jayawardenapura Mawatha by reducing the traffic between the main flows at Rajagiriya Junction,” Warnakulasooriya said.
Four lane flyover from Battaramulla to Borella along Parliament Road will be constructed at a cost of Rs.4.6 billion funded by the Spanish government.
In the first phase, a two lane fly over will be constructed from Battaramulla to Borella along Parliament Road. It is to be completed by November 2017.
Under the second phase, another two lane flyover will be constructed parallel to the first flyover. It will be completed by December 2018. The length of the flyover is 533 metres, while its width is 21.4 metres.
Apart from the Rajagiriya flyover, two more flyovers are being constructed in Ganemulla and Polgahawela, to reduce congestion mainly caused by railway crossings.
The two projects, estimated to cost Rs. 4 billion, are expected to be completed this year and next year.
Project engineer Himantha Jayalath said the three projects are built with Spanish aid and expertise and fully overseen by the RDA.
He also advised motorists to avoid the Welikada Junction in Rajagiriya and use alternative routes as there will be heavy traffic congestions in the area due to the construction.
