The 33rd Mercantile Athletic Sports Championships will be held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama from 20 to 22 August and it will be held in a new style, Sydney Ratnayake, President Sri Lanka Mercantile Athletic Sports Association said at a press conference held at Otters Club, Colombo 7.
“We have received 50 applications from leading Mercantile institutions in the country and any institution can participate in this championship after registering under our association,” he said.
“Over 100 Indian athletes will participate at this championship from Indian Mercantile institutions. The Sri Lankan winners will get an opportunity to participate at the Indian Mercantile Athletic Championship,” Ratnayake further said.
“The winners of this championship will get special trophies and Mercantile institutions will felicitate athletes finishing upto 10th position.
A registered judge panel from Sri Lanka Athletic Sports Association will judge this championship,” said Secretary, Tornado Jayasundera.
“Our association will continue “Kreeda Saviya” programme this year. We have decided to donate around Rs. 30,000 valued sports goods to the school athletes who won national and international level from low income families under Kreeda Saviya programme,” he said.
The Sri Lanka Mercantile Athletic Sports Association has decided to extend its applications till August 2.
