Foreign flavour at inaugural Dialog Sri Lanka Super 7s

The inaugural Dialog Sri Lanka Super 7`s rugby tournament will catch the imagination of the local rugby loving public, as world rugby supremo’s are here to take part in an emerging top level tournament.

The first version of the Dialog Sri Lanka Rugby Super 7`s Championship first leg will be worked off at the Racecourse International Stadium, Reid Avenue from August 5 to 6 and the second leg from August 12 to 13 again at the same venue the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union announced at a media briefing held at Hilton Hotel, yesterday.

“We hope to set an example to all by conducting these events at the highest international level which we believe will be the key to develop sports locally while popularizing Sri Lanka as an international sporting venue, SLRFU officials further explained.

Eight club teams will be in action where local players have been offered the opportunity to play with the world’s best ruggerites. Not just in rugby, but in any sport the international exposure is a must for its development. Top level international ruggerites from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and England will arrive in the country for the big event. Each team will be entitled to three foreign players.

Also eight school teams will play in this tournament in the schools section along with the club tournament.

The eight club teams are: Cargils Ceylon Gladiators, Access Group Kings, Walkers CML Vipers, Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd Eagles, Just In Time Group Dragons, Soft Logic Holdings PLC Warriors, EZY Corporation Wolfs, and Etisalat Lanka (Pvt) Ltd Phantoms.

The eight school teams comprise Isipathana College, St. Peter’s College Bambalapitiya, S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia, St. Joseph’s College Maradana, St. Anthony’s College Kandy, Wesley College, D.S. Senanayake College and Zahra College Maradana.
