Certification from WHO for eliminating filaria, malaria

 

Sri Lanka will receive World Health Organisation (WHO) certification on July 21 for eliminating filaria, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

He said that certification for eliminating malaria is expected in September.

WHO Director General Dr. Margaret Chan is due in Sri Lanka on July 21st for a WHO regional conference, the certification on successful filaria elimination will be awarded then, the Minister said.

Minister Senaratne said this was a significant achievement for Sri Lanka, which has already eliminated other diseases such as polio, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and Ssmall pox.

The WHO aims at eliminating filaria worldwide by 2020 - Sri Lanka has achieved this target long before that set time, the Health Minister said.
