JO endorses new Governor

Several leading lights of the Joint Opposition yesterday expressed their deep appreciation and approval on the appointment of a renowned economist in the calibre of Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Among them were former Ministers D.E.W. Gunasekera, Prof. Tissa Vitharana and parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

Addressing a press conference organised by the Socialist Alliance at the Borella Dr. N.M. Perera Memorial Hall, Gunasekera said they won the first struggle launched by them.

Addressing a press conference organised by the Socialist Alliance at the Borella Dr. N.M. Perera Memorial Hall, Gunasekera said they have won the first struggle launched by them to rescue the Central Bank from the grip of politicisation.

He said in the first instance they did not oppose the appointment of Arjuna Mahendran as the Governor of the Central Bank.

“But the unnecessary burdens heaped on the people by his subsequent actions forced them to complain about his mistakes and wrongdoings to COPE,” Gunasekera said.

He said Dr. Coomaraswamy was well known to him because they had participated in economic debates and discussions together.

Dr. Coomaraswamy had unquestionable talents in the field of economics and he was an internationally acclaimed economist, he added.

Gunasekera said as such they appreciated the action taken by President Maithripala Sirisena to appoint Dr. Coomaraswamy as the Central Bank Governor.
