CTSU protest called off; Finance Ministry promises solution

The protest by the Ceylon Teachers Service Union was called off after the Finance Ministry promised them a solution.

The CTSU, together with a collective of Western Province undergraduates, were protesting the inefficiency of authorities in granting them jobs.

The protesters allege that although 15,000 teachers sat the exam for graduate teachers, only 4,097 passed. Of this pool of teachers, 4,000 are yet to receive jobs, they said, despite there being a demand for 5,000 teachers in the Western Province.

A petition was handed over to the Secretary to the Finance Ministry, and the protest was called off, following positive feedback from the Ministry, Ceylon Teachers Service Union Treasurer Priynatha Liyanagamage told the Daily News Online.
