UNP in e-membership drive

The United National Party (UNP) will be targeting to increase their vote base by 20% while launching e membership cards for the first time in Sri Lanka’s political history. The party aims to harvest three million votes out of the 15 million registered voters through this measure. UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim presented the printed copy of the e membership card to the media at a media briefing at the UNP Party Headquarters Sirikotha yesterday (21).

The e membership card will be launched on June 23 at Sirikotha from 9 a.m. onwards with the participation of the leader of the party, Prime Minisiter Ranil Wickremesinghe. The event will coincide with the 92nd birth anniversary of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

“Any person, willing to obtain membership of the UNP, can simply download our app from Google play store or Apple app store and become a member. The UNP had taken this initiative in order to move with the developments of modern day technology. We are planning to enroll youth as much as

possible for our party as we believe that they are the driving force behind a country’s development,” Hashim said.

The issuing of printed membership cards to the party members will also commence on June 23 at the Kuliyapitiya Town with the participation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Meanwhile, the UNP’s 70th anniversary will be celebrated on September 6 with the participation of the UNP membership and several leaders from India,China,Malaysia, England and Singapore who are linked to the UNP.

“We are taking steps to reorganise the party from grassroots level. Accordingly, a new set of organisers will be appointed. For this, we will be going from town to town, home to home to spread our vision and to increase our votes. We are confident that our party will perform well during the upcoming elections.

Therefore, I reject the allegations made by the opposition that we are delaying elections on purpose. If the Department of Elections is ready to hold the election our party is ready even tomorrow,” he added.
