New constitution by year end: Ajith P.

The process of formulating a new constitution will conclude by the end of this year, Power and Renewable Energy Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said.

The final draft of the constitution had not been prepared yet, but will be presented to the public once it is completed, the Deputy Minister said.

He added that the new constitution would not by any means affect the unitary character of the state:

“Some demand a devolution of power whilst some others oppose the division of power. Only a list of proposals has been presented as yet. The President, Prime Minister and the MPs are working together towards this in Parliament. The new constitution will be introduced to the country by the end of this year no matter which conspiracy comes our way,” he told a media briefing at the Power and Renewable Energy Ministry yesterday.

He also said that some parties were trying to instigate racial and religious disharmony among the public by carrying false news about the final draft of the constitution.

“We came into agreement, during the last presidential election, as well as the general election, that the country needs a new constitution. We strongly believed that all those who value democracy should join together despite racial, religious and caste differences to prepare this new constitution,” he said.
