Anuradhapura gets ready for Poson

 

 Arrangements are being made to provide facilities such as drinking water, electricity, sanitation, transport and security for pilgrims at Anuradhapura, Mihinthale and Thanthirimale during the Poson season.

Anuradhapura District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri told the Daily News that around 1.5 million devotees will visit Anuradhapura during Poson. Meat stalls and liquor shops in the Anuradhapura district will be closed from June 17 to 24 in the district. The sale of cigarettes in the sacred city limits is prohibited.

Lake House Mihintale Aloka Pooja will be held for seven days in association with the CEB. President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will open Aloka pooja on June 18 and 19. The sacred tooth relics of the Buddha which arrived in Sri Lanka from Pakistan's Takshila Museum will be exhibited to pilgrims at Thanthirimale temple on June 18 and 19.

Dusirith Duralamu (Let's do away with misconducts) is the theme of the national Poson celebrations, Ruwanweliseya Chief Incumbent Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka thera said.

The Poson week long pirith chanting will commence on June 17. The Poson week will end with a dana at Bomaluwa temple on June 24.

Around 6,000 Police officers will be detailed for duty in Anuradhapura during Poson. Fourteen schools will be closed for one week to accommodate security personnel.

The District Secretary said bathing at Tisawewa tank is prohibited. He requested people to use Basawakkulama, Mahakanadarawa, Nachchaduwa tanks and Malwathuoya for bathing and washing.

Police and the Navy in collaboration with Life Saving Services Society will maintain special life saving units at main reservoirs.
