Sri Lanka Cricket’s charity programme, Cricket Aid will be launched at the home of cricket, at Long Room at Lord’s Cricket Grounds in England on June 4 and 5 (Saturday and Sunday) to raise funds for Chronic Kidney Disease and flood-affected people in Sri Lanka.
The programme, the brainchild of current SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala, who as then SLC President, initiated this worthy cause after the devastating tsunami which occurred on December 26 2004.
SLC hopes to help kidney patients with treatment and pure water facilities, which are the main requirements of the poor kidney patients in the rural areas of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka national players who are touring in England and the fans in England can join this worthy cause by contributing financially.
High technology Brain Centre for national cricketers
Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to open a high technology centre to uplift the availability of modern technology for national players.
The centre is headed by Cricket Advisory Committee Chairman Aravinda de Silva. Chairman of Selectors Sanath Jayasuriya, Head Coach Graham Ford, and High Peformance Manager Simon Willis, will also be involved in this venture.
SSC to be developed as world class venue
SLC and Sinhalese Sports Club will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop the SSC grounds to a world class flood-lit stadium.
SSC is one of Sri Lanka’s Test venues, situated in the heart of Colombo as well as the home of Sri Lanka Cricket Headquarters. So, SLC President Sumathipala is hoping to convert the SSC into a fabulous stadium with a modern architectural design within the next 10 years.
The Executive Committee has approved the renovation and refurbishment of the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium at a cost of rupees 21 million.
Meanwhile, in view of the upcoming Australia tour of Sri Lanka, SLC has decided to play two day/night one-day games at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium. As such an augmentation of the floodlighting system has been approved.
SLC will call for tenders and the tender process will be facilitated by Surath Wickramasinghe Associates.
Nelson Mendis to take charge of Under-19 squad
Veteran coach, Nelson Mendis has been appointed to take charge of the Under-19 National squad and will oversee preparation and play during the forthcoming tours of England and South Africa.
Mendis’ wealth of experience and knowledge will be an invaluable asset to the youth squad as it prepares itself for the international arena.
