PM orders special inquiry on Palpita appointment

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered a special inquiry into the appointment of Anusha Palpita as the former Telecommunations Regulatory Commission Director Genaral Ministry.

He issued this order to the Home Affairs Ministry yesterday responding to the public outcry over this appointment as a sheer disregard for good governance principles.

The Prime Minister has ordered the removal Palpita from this position, if he was proven unsuitable to hold the post, following the inquiry.

Anusha Palpita is a former Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority under the previous government and is being questioned by investigative bodies over his involvement in several bribery and corruption charges. The misappropriation of over Rs. 600 million for the distribution of Sil Redi on the eve of the last Presidential election is one among the charges against him.

Many civil society activists dubbed this appointment as a betrayal of good governance policies.
