54th Sri Lanka Junior National Athletic Championships: Harshani creates Pole Vault SL record

Harshani Dharmaratne after establishing a new Sri Lanka record in U-20 women’s pole vault event at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama yesterday.

 

Harshani Dharmaratne of A Ratnayake Central College, Walala broke a Sri Lanka record in the Girls Under-20 Pole Vault finals on the openning day of the 54th Sri Lanka Junior National Athletic Championships which started at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama, Homagama yesterday.

Dharmaratne won the gold medal leaping to a 3.34m height, erasing the previous record of 3.33m set up by famous athlete of the event, Sri Lanka Navy’s Anoma Karunawansa in Diyagama last year.

Apart from that three more new meet records were shattered.

LGP Dhananjaya of St. Joseph Vaz College, Vennappuwa, set up a new meet record in Boys’ Under-20 Triple Jump final winning the gold medal. His record breaking distance was 15.78m. Mirigama DS Senanayake College’s Chamal Kumarasiri also bettered the previous record with a distance of 15.62m. Anuradhapura District Athletic Association’s W. M. Niyomal established a new meet record in the Boys’ Under-20 Hammer Throw final, winning the gold medal for his 34.10-metre attempt.

Also in the Boys’ Under-23 Hammer Throw final, Sri Lanka Army’s P.K.L. Prabashana created a new meet record with a 36.44m distance.

The Sri Lanka Telecom powered the three-day National Junior Meet which regarded a selection trial for forthcoming 17th Asian Junior Championship to be held in Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam next month and also for the IAAF’s World Junior Athletic Championship, which will be held in Bydgoszcz, Poland from July 19 to 24 this year.

Twenty-five final events are scheduled for today, starting from 8am.
