Dutch woman injured after vehicle crashes into Dutch Canal

A Dutch woman was injured and admitted to the Marawila Hospital when the vehicle she was travelling, fell into the Dutch canal at Marawila at around 3.30 p.m. yesterday.

She faced this mishap while she was heading for Kalpitiya from the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The woman identified as Jane Jisbertha, 36, arrived in the country yesterday. Area residents brought her to the Marawila hospital soon after she met with the accident.

The injured woman was subsequently transferred to Colombo National Hospital last evening. Residents said that the woman's vehicle was travelling at high speed at the time of the accident.

The canal was constructed by the Dutch in 1800 to transport salt from Puttalam saltern to Colombo.
