Ten traditional jewellery villages

A large scale programme to open the international market for Sri Lanka’s gem studded gold jewellery to the traditional rural goldsmiths is being formulated by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena, NGJA Chairman Asanka Welagedara said.

He said as part of this programme, 10 traditional jewellery villages will be set up in 10 areas inthe country during its first stage as directed by the President.

The village craftsmen would be provided with knowledge in modern technology and latest jewellery patterns in demand and their products would be marketed through leading businessmen.

All jewellery items produced in these villages will carry to NGJA quality certification.

Welagedara said a sales centre for these products would also be opened at the Pettah Gold Centre for the benefit of local buyers.

This is a special concept of the President implemented under his guidance and supervision, he said.
