Adi vasi in fatal fall from tallest Buddha statue

 

An adi vasi who removed the bumble-bees colony built on the Buddha statue, considered the tallest in Asia, died when he fell yesterday while coming down after accomplishing the task. The statue in Batamulla Kanda International Buddhist Centre premises, Matugama is 135 feet in height.

Four members of the adi vasis had come from Dambana area to remove this bumble-bees' colony and as revealed they were specialists regarding the bumble-bees' colony removing process.

"We provided them safety belts and other safety equipment. But they refused these things. We advised them to wear those safety belts. But they didn't heed our request," Matugama UNP chief organiser and Western Province Parliamentarian Jagath Pinnagodawithana, the constructor of this statue said.

The victim identified as Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Kiri Banda, 51, was the most accomplished in the team.

As reported they successfully removed the bumble-bees' colony from the statue and when descending, Kiribanda fell. He was immediately admitted to hospital where he died.

Matugama Police are investigating.
