Ten sub committees proposed to deliberate on specific areas

The Public Representatives Committee on Constitutional Reforms chaired by Lal Wijenayake has proposed to set up 10 Sub Committees consisting of MPs to deliberate on specific areas relating to the new Constitution.

Wijenayake told the Daily News yesterday that the proposed 10 sub-committees were informed to the Steering Committee chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Steering Committee is to convene on April 28 at the Parliamentary complex to decide on the Sub-Committees and their scope.

Wijenayake said the scope of their proposed sub-committees include 'nature of the State, basic structure of the Constitution, Local Governments/Grama Rajya, power sharing, public security and human security, election of the President, Independent Commissions and Constitutional Council' among others.

Each such Sub-Committee will comprise of not more than 11 members and their Chairmen will be appointed by the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee may appoint other experts to aid and advise the Constitutional Assembly and its Sub-Committees.

Wijenayake said there could be a slight delay in handing over the final report of their Committee which gathered public opinions on Constitutional reforms.

"We were expected to hand it over before April 30, but this could be delayed by another week or two. We are presently compiling the report and we may require more time. The report will be submitted in English, but it will be translated to Sinhala and Tamil too," he said.
