Over 100 Lankans applied for asylum in Switzerland in March

Switzerland's State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) had stated that they had received 146 applications from asylum seekers from Sri Lanka during March.

In the first quarter of 2016, the Swiss authorities received 8,315 applications from asylum seekers.

According to Swiss authorities this is a drop of 45 percent compared to the last quarter of 2015.

The majority of the applications in March had been from those who fled Eritrea and the corresponding number was 227. The Swiss authorities also received 166 applications from Afghan nationals, 143 requests from Gambians, 143 from Iraqis and 141 from Syrians. The SEM said that despite the significant decrease in the quantity of requests, the migration issue was unpredictable and the situation might change at any time.
