Uninterrupted power during festive season - Ajith

The government is determined to provide an uninterrupted power supply during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive season, Power and Energy Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said.

He was participating in a press conference at the Power and Energy Ministry premises yesterday.

Perera said the government would make sure round the clock power supply at all times, despite whether its the New Year season or not.

He said technical faults in power generation and distribution would be rectified, observing that some of these matters were beyond the control of politicians.

Perera said one plant in Norochcholai had to be stopped due to a technical fault, adding that the engineers informed that it would take about three days to restore this plant.

Commenting on the offshore accounts, the deputy minister said a number of businessmen who worked closely with Sri Lankan politicians had stashed away their money in various countries.

"We have found several accounts in a Dubai bank. Some who possess black money have not deposited them in Swiss banks. We have got certain information on the money of Sri Lankans invested in Panama. Those should be properly investigated," he said.

Commenting on the manpower workers' issue, Perera said 2,400 who had the qualifications were given permanent appointments. "Despite the protests of manpower workers, as a responsible minister I cannot give appointments to those who had not met with the minimum qualifications. However, we will discuss the problem with the trade unions. We have ordered to stop recruiting workers through manpower agencies. Our effort is to provide jobs to the rest of manpower workers too," he said.

The deputy minister said Chinese funded projects would be carried forward in a mutually beneficial manner by rectifying the initial loopholes.
