CTU opposes govt's decision to award "appointments against political revenge"

The Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) along with eight other administrative unions lodged a complaint at the Human Rights Commission today against the decision by the Education Ministry to award "appointments against political revenge".

The government had planned to award about 4,500 appointments in Sri Lanka Teacher's Service, Sri Lanka Educator's Service and Sri Lanka Principal's Service.

"The government is planning to offer more than 4,500 appointments naming them as "appointments against political revenge".

We strongly oppose this decision as these appointments are being awarded while violating the recruiting procedure mentioned in the service constitution. Therefore we lodged a complaint today (12) at the Human Rights Commission against this decision," CTU Chief Secretary Joseph Stalin said.

He said that these kinds of appointments were offered by the previous regime as well.

"It is reasonable if the government offers them monetary benefits if a so called political revenge had taken place. But we cannot agree with the decision taken to offer them appointments at a time when the administrative examinations are being held to recruit officers.

We ask the government to stop these appointments with immediate effect as it is an unjust done to others who sit for the examination," Stalin added.
