Woman hospitalised after alleged assault by Councillor

A woman was assaulted by Southern Provincial Councillor and SPC opposition leader S.Thennakone Nilame and hospitalised at the Hambantota General Hospital with injuries to her ear, Ambalantota Police said.

Police said she was allegedly beaten by the SPC opposition leader following an exchange of words between them over the removal of temporary stalls opposite the paddy research station at Ambalantota.

The victim is a resident of Pattiyagodawalawa, Ambalantota. There were many requests from the officer in charge of the paddy research station at Ambalantota to evacuate the temporary traders doing business opposite the paddy research station because it poses a threat to the activities of the paddy research station. As such, a few temporary traders were removed on the instructions of the SPC opposition leader instead of all the traders, resulting in the dispute.
