Rail gate keepers request job permanency

The Railways Department cannot take a decision about absorbing gate keepers at Rail Crossings to the permanent cadre of the department, Acting Superintendent Operations N.S. Polwattage said.

He said gate keepers had been recruited under the Police Department. Polwattage said they have requested the Police Department to grant these gate keepers job permanency or else find some alternate solution to it. He had requested that attention be drawn towards recruiting them under the Civil Defence Department at least according to their educational qualifications as they performed a vital responsibility. Gate keepers even staged a strike in the past seeking job permanency.

"There are nearly 2,061 gate keepers manning 687 rail gates at crossings countrywide and they claimed that the daily stipend of Rs 250 they received was inadequate to make a living," he said.
