Kotmale ruins emerge as water levels drop

Several ruins including the Kadadora Viharaya which went under water with the construction of the Kotmale reservoir under the accelerated Mahaweli Development Scheme have re-emerged with the severe drop in the reservoirs’ water levels following the long spell of drought.

Nearly 57 villages and 54 places of worship in Kotmale were submerged with the completion of the reservoir in 1985.

Welcome rains were experienced in the hill country on March 28, ending on of the worst droughts.

If rains continued unabated these ruins will disappear once again under water.
