Former LTTE cadres call off hunger strike

The hunger strike launched by 13 former LTTE cadres demanding that the government expedite the lawsuit against them was called off following the assurance given by the Prisons Reforms and Rehabilitation Minister D.M. Swaminathan.

The hunger strike was called off by the prison inmates after Prison Commissioner General Nissan Danasinghe informed them that the minister has given an assurance that he would discuss the issue with the Attorney General's Department officials.

According to Prisons spokesman Thushara Upuldeniya, the 13 prison inmates had their mid day meal yesterday as usual. The prison inmates began a hunger strike demanding that the government ensure their early release on February 23 and four inmates who fell ill due to hunger strike were also admitted to the Prison hospital.
