Strokes killer number three in Sri Lanka

Strokes is killer number three in Sri Lanka. The third highest number of deaths in Sri Lanka are due to strokes, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala said.

Dr. Mahipala said Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) are one of the main health issues in Sri Lanka.

Heart disease, strokes, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases are the main NCDs affecting the population, he said.

Dr. Mahipala said three main factors cause NCDs among people.

They are unhealthy food habits which encourage people to have food with excessive sugar, salt and fats, insufficient physical exercises and smoking and alcohol, he said.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry sources said a recent survey revealed that a Sri Lankan consumes over 6.7 milligrams of salt per day while the approved amount is only 2.2 grams of salt per day.

The Body Mass Index should be maintained below 23 to maintain good health without getting NCDs, the sources said.
