Power should be used for the betterment of people: President

Power should not be considered as an end itself but an opportunity to work for the good of the masses. Power is also transient and can be lost at any moment. Most problems crop up in society because of some people who think themselves as immortal, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

The President expressed these sentiments addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Maithri Mithuro Organisation held at the Galle Face Hotel on Thursday.

President Sirisena said the 100 day programme spelt out in the election manifesto would have been more successful if Parliament was dissolved after the Presidential election held in January 2015.

The President said after coming to power without a two thirds majority in Parliament, he was handling a most difficult job, than all past Presidents.

"Sri Lanka would go down in history as the only country which amended the constitution despite the government not commanding a two thirds majority in Parliament," he said.

President Sirisena who noted that the government was successfully completing the beginning of a long and arduous journey, added that it was taking steps to steer the country towards development by winning international support which was lost in the past.

The President who described the development programme started by the government as a gaining of resources needed to take the country forward, said the 18th amendment to the constitution was the biggest tragedy in the country's political history.

Maithree Mithuro Organisation president Asela Iddawela and other members were also present.
