A woman died and six others were injured when an old Bo tree along Aluthgama-Dhammananda Mawatha in Kandy adjoining the Bogambara prison premises fell on a Cab around 1 p.m. yesterday. The deceased was proceeding towards the Bogambara grounds with her husband and three children when the tragedy occurred.
The husband and the three children were admitted to the Kandy hospital in a critical condition. Two persons travelling in the Cab were also injured. They are residents of Dankotuwa. The deceased was identified as Padma Kumari (46) of Edanduwawa, Polgahamula.
She and her other family members were on their way to Bogambara grounds to see her eldest daughter participating in the Viharamahadevi Vidyalaya inter house sports meet when they faced this tragedy. Onlookers had rushed to the scene and taken the injured to hospital.
The Kandy Municipal Council Fire Brigade had cleared the road by cutting and removing the fallen tree.
