Approve National Audit Act in parliament, demands Audit Examiners' Service Union

The Sri Lanka Audit Examiners Service Union demands the government to bring the National Audit Act in Parliament as soon as possible and pass it to activate Audit Service Commission which has been idling for three months since its establishment, its President H. M. K. Herath said.

Addressing media during a press conference in Colombo yesterday, he said that the Act is with the Attorney General's Department and one year had passed without presenting the National Audit Act in Parliament. It should be done by the Prime Minister. Without having this Act, it is impossible to ensure the independence of the Auditor General and achieving the main objectives of the 19th Amendment.

According to Herath, Auditor General Gamini Wijesinghe is a qualified individual with more than 30 years of experience in the Public Service.

He is the best qualified person for the position and now he is carrying out his duty in the best way possible. He has given strength and hope for the employees and carrying out his duty in the best manner. No rule, regulation or tradition had been violated while appointing him. But a handful of persons who were involved in corruption and malpractices during the previous regime sling mud at him because their misdeeds are going to be revealed.

Herath pointed out that without the National Audit Act, nothing is happening. Transfers, promotions, new appointments, etc. are on hold.

There are around 300 vacancies to be filled. Under the new Act, private companies which use over 50 percent of government funds to be audited by the Auditor General's Department and there are 212 such companies in Sri Lanka.
