MR attended Vijaya Kumaratunga's funeral: ex-Provincial Councillor

Mahajana Peramuna former Provincial Councillor Premasiri Perera refuted the statement made by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga that Mahinda Rajapaksa did not attend Vijaya Kumaratunga's funeral.

He said Rajapaksa who was the then SLFP Beliatta organiser, attended Kumaratunga's funeral.

"I accompanied Mahinda Rajapaksa to his car when he was leaving," Perera said. "Mahinda Rajapaksa was one of my school mates".

He made these observations at a press conference at the Abhayarama Temple Auditorium, Narahenpita yesterday.

Perera said he was one of the five founder members of the Mahajana Peramuna founded by Vijaya Kumaratunga and he was also the vice secretary of the party.

He said Kumaratunga was a good friend of Rajapaksa.

Perera said Kumaratunga had also addressed D.A.Rajapaksa commemoration ceremonies.

"Two prominent politicians did not attend Kumaratunga's funeral. One was Rohana Wijeweera and the other was Chandrika Kumaratunga's brother, Anura Bandaranaike," he said.

Mahajana Peramuna Provincial Councillor Renuka Perera said it was former President Chandrika Kumaratunga who betrayed Vijaya Kumaratunga by cooperating with the JVP who killed Vijaya Kumaratunga and with the UNP which imprisoned Vijaya Kumaratunga.

Abhayaramaya Chief Incumbent Ven. Muruttetuwe Ananda Thera, Patriotic Bhikku Front Secretary Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Ruhunurata Bhikshu Front secretary Ven. Omare Kassapa Thera and retired teacher of Ananda College Ven. Wepathaira Hemaloka Thera and Desha Vimukthi Jathika Party Vice President Ven.
