Saegis campus launches SIFIE Forum

 

Saegis campus recently launched an innovative programme, “Saegis International Forum of Intellectuals and Experts (SIFIE)”.

This forum will host public lectures/seminars conducted mostly by eminent scholars and experts in the Sri Lankan diaspora.

The inaugural lecture in SIFIE will be delivered by Professor Premachandra Athukorala during 5-6.30 pm on February 11in the Saegis Campus auditorium. The title of the lecture is “Sri Lanka’s Post-Conflict Development Challenge: Learning from the Past”. It will focus on the issue of economic reforms for sustainable growth in Sri Lanka during the post-conflict period against the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s post-independence development experience and the current global economic outlook.

Premachandra Athukorala is Professor of Economics at the Australian National University (ANU), Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, Honorary Professorial Research Fellow in the School of Environment and Development at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

His publications include Trade Policy Issues in Asian Development (Rutledge, 1998), Structural Adjustment and Labour Migration in East Asia (Oxford University Press 1999). Liberalization and Industrial Adjustment: Sri Lanka in International Perspective (Oxford University Press, 2000), Saving, Investment and Growth in India (Oxford University Press, 2002), Multinational Enterprises in Asian Development (Edward Elgar, 2007), five other books, four edited volumes, and numerous contributions to professional journals and multi-authored volumes.

Professor Athukorala has served, at various times, as a consultant to the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Development Bank Institute, International Labour Organisation, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, World Trade Organisation, United Nations International Trade Centre, and the Australian Agency for International Development. These assignments have resulted in work on, inter alia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Ethiopia, and Jordan.
