UNP victory at provincial polls definite: Kiriella

The UNP will win the forthcoming provincial election, Leader of the House, Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella said.

The minister made these views at a meeting at the Local Government Department in Colombo yesterday.

The minister said there was no Opposition in the villages today and that the Opposition activities have all been halted.

Members of the UNP's rural organisations are working hard for victory at the Provincial elections. Supporters are queuing up to join the UNP and make the party victorious, he said.

"It is for the first time in Sri Lankan history that two major political parties have joined together to create a conventional government. This type of rule has not only become an example to our country but the world as well. When the President and Prime Minister travelled to foreign countries, leaders of their countries say that the Sri Lankan governing method should be regarded highly," he said.

"This is a unique situation. Some cannot digest this because for 20 years, corruption and scam were rampant. We must take forward this new political culture. The previous government thought that only peace was enough to develop the country. Peace is necessary but good governance and transcendence in laws is needed as well," he said.

Kiriella said as the previous regime didn't take these points into mind, the development they expected didn't happen.

"The country didn't get any investments and the country was in debt," he said. "The people of the hill capital have always supported the UNP. Even at the upcoming provincial election, the people of the hill capital as well as the rest of the country will support the UNP."

The minister's Private Secretary Chamindrani Kiriella and Kandy District Provincial Councillors attended the meeting.
