Multinational trying to prevent implementation of Drug Act: Dr.Vitarana

Since multinational companies are conspiring to prevent the implementation of the Drug Act introduced by the government, the LSSP would take action to bring this to the notice and attention of Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, LSSP leader Prof. Tissa Vitarana said.

Addressing a press conference at the Dr. N.M. Perera Memorial Hall, Rajagiriya, Prof. Vitarana said Prof. Lal Jayakody and Prof. Chrishantha Weerasooriya who have been appointed as members of the Drug Regulatory Authority were fully competent persons who were above board. "But multinationals were trying to get them removed to enable them to manipulate the regulatory authority." He said Sri Lanka had achieved a Guinness record as regards drug registration.

Prof. Vitarana said he had submitted 12 recommendations to the Drug Act when it was formulated by the 100 Day government and he was happy to see Dr. Senaratne including eight of them in the Act.

He said although a person by the name of Kahandaliyagamage was being suggested for appointment to the Authority by interested parties, he had held a position in the Fonterra Group which is a multinational.

Prof. Vitarana said he would therefore request the Health Minister not to fall prey to the machinations of multinationals.
