H'tota curd industry in crisis

The curd industry in Hambantota distrct is facing a crisis situation due to various reasons. The ever increasing cattle thefts, ever rising cost of poonac and cattle feed, lack of proper treatment for cattle when they fall sick, ever rising cost of medicines used in the treatment of cattle, lack of grazing lands and prohibition of cattle grazing in National Parks are some of the reasons that paved way for this crisis.

The curd manufacturers say that the new generation of curd manufacturers do not prepare curd to the required standards as the elderly people did as such the sale of curd has dropped to minimum in the meantime curd consumers said that it was the state farms that prepare curd to the required standards which created a big demand from such curd.

The state farm managers in the district said that they cannot cater to the consumers' demand. In the meantime the residents in the area said the buffalo population that contribute greatly towards the manufacture of curd are being ill treated by the herd owners and that they die on road sides as they are abandoned due to their old age.
