The Presidential Commission of Inquiry investigating into mass scale corruption and malpractices wants more teeth to the Commission to be more independent in their decisions without having them referred to the Attorney General for advice.
It is learnt that the Commission is seeking more powers to be independent in their decisions without them being referred to the Attorney General on the grounds that four sitting judges are serving in the Commission. The Commission officials are learnt to have stressed the importance of securing more powers to the Commission to deal with those who have allegedly abused power, since the process is relatively slow and gives a wrong impression to the public who are eagerly waiting for action against the corrupt. The Commission is to write to the President seeking an extension of its mandatory term which is due to expire in March. A senior official of the Commission speaking on grounds of anonymity told the Daily News that Government servants are more concerned than ever on the rules and regulations after the Commission started investigations against public servants who have allegedly abused power.
"We will write to the President seeking an extension and it is important to ensure the practice of good governance in the country," he said.
He stressed that the investigations into the alleged corruption and financial malpractices are going on and they are on track.
