Special training to discipline VIP vehicle drivers

The Motor Traffic Commissioner's Department has launched a programme to provide a special training to drivers of VIP vehicles, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

He said this will ensure that those drivers observe road rules to the letter and set an example to other road users.

The minister disclosed this at a training workshop on the issuing of commuter service driving licenses held at the SLTB Head Office at Narahenpita on January 11.

Minister de Silva said drivers of VIP vehicles especially should drive their vehicles in keeping with road discipline without trying to display the power of their VIP bosses. Very often certain police officers who enforce the law were seen riding motorcycles without wearing helmets. Such actions highlighted in the media would debase the honour and prestige of law enforcement officers.

The minister said accidents had today become a national calamity. According to the gazette notification dated 06-03-2014 all commuter service drivers should undergo a special driving training. There were more than 35,000 such drivers and all could not be given training at once. Therefore the training will be provided in stages. Thereafter specialised training would be made compulsory for the issuing of commuter transport licenses.

Commission General of Motor Traffic Jagath Chandrasiri, National Transport Commission Chairman B. A. P. Indrasekera and SLTB Chairman Ramal Siriwardena were also present.
