Host of religious events mark President's inauguration

Countrywide ceremonies will be held today to commemorate the first anniversary of the assumption of office of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The main national commemorative ceremony organised in this connection will be held at the BMICH, Colombo at 2.00 p.m. today under the patronage of President Sirisena. The main lecture at this ceremony will be delivered by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, a grandson of late Mahatma Gandhi who pioneered the Indian independence struggle.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, ministers, MPs, intellectuals, artistes and several other invitees will also participate.

A highlight will be the launching of the book Ekama Dayak - Maha Balayak issued to mark the event.

A special religious programme to invoke blessings on President Maithripala Sirisena, the government and the people will be held at the Kalutara Bodhi at 7.00 a.m. tomorrow with the participation of the President.

The premises of the Kalutara Bodhi will also be officially vested in the Kalutara Bodhi Trust through a special Sannasa on this day.

Meanwhile, a commemorative ceremony to mark the 117th birth anniversary of Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike will be held near the Bandaranaike Statue at Galle Face under the patronage of President Sirisena at 9.00 a.m. tomorrow.

Thereafter, President Sirisena will visit the Kotte Sri Naga Viharaya to attend a pinkama in memory of Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera.

A press release issued by the President's Media Division stated the Janapathita Kiyanna and Janapathi Hadabima programme where people could directly place their problems to the President will also be launched at the Janadhipathi Mandiraya in Fort at 11.00 a.m. tomorrow.

The Development Appraisal Bureau established at the Presidential Secretariat to monitor the proper implementation of directives issued by the President regarding countrywide development activities and measures to ensure a contented lifestyle to the people will also be opened by the President tomorrow.

An all night Pirith ceremony to mark the President's completion of one year in office will also be held at the Presidential Secretariat tomorrow.

President Sirisena is also scheduled to address Parliament at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow.

A cultural festival will follow at Independence Square from 6.30 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. tomorrow.

The Janapathi Abhimangalawasara Seya Samaruma photographic exhibition organised by the President's Media Division to mark the President's completion of one year in office will be held at the Colombo Arcade throughout the day tomorrow.
