National ceremony to mark President's first year in office today

The national ceremony to mark the completion of the first year of democratic governance under the Presidency of Maithripala Sirisena will be celebrated under the theme "Compassionate Governance- Stable Country" today at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Convention Hall from 2 p.m.

President Sirisena who campaigned on the theme of good governance (Yahapalayanaya) and anti-corruption was elected into office with a clear majority on January 8, 2015.A host of events have been organized island wide to mark this occasion The main national commemorative ceremony organised in this connection will be held at the BMICH, Colombo at 2.00 p.m. today under the patronage of President Sirisena.

The main lecture at this ceremony will be delivered by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, a grandson of late Mahatma Gandhi who pioneered the Indian independence struggle.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, ministers, MPs, intellectuals, artistes and several other invitees will also participate.

A highlight will be the launching of the book Ekama Dayak - Maha Balayak issued to mark the event.

A special religious programme to invoke blessings on President Maithripala Sirisena, the government and the people will be held at the Kalutara Bodhi at 7.00 a.m. tomorrow with the participation of the President.

The premises of the Kalutara Bodhi will also be officially vested in the Kalutara Bodhi Trust through a special Sannasa on this day.
