Devinuwara residents demand water

Residents of Pattiyahena, Helawaththa, Kalapuhena, Kapugma and Sirimapura in the Devinuwara Divisional Secretariat protested against continued water cuts by blocking the Matara-Tangalle main road oppsite the Devinuwara clock tower last morning.

Traffic was disrupted for more than three hours while the police directed commuters to use alternate routes. Devinuwara residents were demanding that water supply be restored immediately.

"We have not had an uninterrupted supply of water for the past two weeks, but the authorities don't care," one of the protesters said.

The protest came to an end when the UNP's chief organizer for Devinuwara H. R. Wimalasiri obtained a promise from authorities that pipe-borne water would be provided to the five villages on three days of the week, until a continuous supply is restored.
