Surge in country's condom use

A 20 year study has shown that the country's condom use has gone up from 1.9 percent in 1987 to six percent by 2007. There were no HIV transmissions after 2000 through blood transfusions, the Health Ministry sources said.

According to these sources, a complete study on condom use in Sri Lanka was commenced in 2015. There are 2,241 HIV positive persons in Sri Lanka by the third quarter of last year. There are 557 AIDS patients.

The HIV prevalence in the 15-49 age group in 2014 is 0.1 percent and it is 75 percent in the age group of 25-49. The HIV prevalence of the persons bellow the age of 15 is three percent, the sources said.

The number of HIV positive persons detected during a quarter has been doubled in six years. The HIV prevalence in Sri Lanka still stays bellow one percent.
