Undergraduates of the Engineering Faculty of the South Eastern University pledged to participate in lectures from tomorrow after agreeing to and expressing satisfaction with the measures taken by the Higher Education Ministry to sort out the issues related to academic activities of the faculty.
The Engineering undergraduates have been refraining from participating in lectures for over two months since last November demanding the appointment of more lecturers for the engineering faculty.
Responding to the demand of the undergraduates, the Higher Education Ministry has taken measures to rectify the issue promptly.
Accordingly, the University Grant Commission (UGC) appointed Prof. Kapila Perera to coordinate matters and suggest a permanent solution. Under the measures taken by Prof. Perera the UGC will appoint more lecturers including a professor and three lecturers, who obtained doctorates, to the Engineering Faculty aiming to rectify the scarcity of academic staff.
Besides, applications have already been called for recruiting more academic staff. Moreover, other issues of the engineering undergraduates including improving welfare and academic facilities will be rectified with immediate effect by the UGC on the advice of Prof. Perera.
Addressing media Prof. Perera said that all the required academic staff will be appointed within a short period so as to ensure the smooth functioning of the faculty. Accordingly, all lecturers appointed to the faculty will be given a special allowance of Rs 150,000 monthly. The remaining staff, who are already in service will also be entitled to an allowance of Rs 100.000 per month.
As a consequence of all these measures, the main issue of the undergraduate will be over, Prof. Prrera said.
Addressing the media undergraduates representative Shanika Karunarathne appealed that the students discontinue their students' action and take part in lectures as usual from today.
