Million signatures to protect children

A petition with one million signatures under the theme of "Lets Protect Our Children" was signed on January 2 at Ruwanweliseya premises, Anuradhapura urging the President to take measures to block access to sites that contain sexually explicit material via mobile phone connections.

S.D. Social Services Association Chairman K. H. Sanjeewa Dhammika Hemasiri said that mobile networks have provided facilities for 3G phones to access the Internet. But with widespread access to the Internet children may be exposed to millions of pages of sexually explicit materials, he said.

"According to the sections 285, 286 and 287 of the Penal Code and the Obscene Publications (Amendment) Act, of 1983, it is illegal to earn money by selling explicit material." he said.
