Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara requested the nation to hoist the National Flag on January 8 to mark the historic victory of the people which led to strengthen democracy in the country.
He was addressing the media at the Information Department yesterday.
Unlike during the former regime, the January 8 revolution will be celebrated in a very simple manner without spending millions, Jayasekera said.
He said that in December every year, almost all ministries spent millions on printing diaries and calendars during the past regime.
Moreover, the ministries spent millions to wish or for the Padavi Prapthiya of the former president publishing full page advertisements in newspapers.
"Those unnecessary spending does not take place now as a result of the good governance," he noted.
Speaking on the recent outcry of Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, Minister Jayasekara said that Weerawansa, totally agreed to the decision of the then government to take Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka into custody.
