Lunch sheets to be banned

President Maithripala Sirisena had granted his approval for regulations to ban the usage of lunch sheets and the production distribution and sale of rigifoam boxes,Southern Province Director of the Central Environment Authority S. H. Premachandra said.

He was addressing the Galle District Environment Committee meeting held at the District Secretariat Auditorium yesterday (03).He said that Cabinet approval had also been received for the move. “We all use such products which are hazardous to the environment due to our convenience without considering their harmful efffects. No substitutes have been introduced in place of these products although we have waited for long. The business community will discover substitutes if these products get banned .In India a special basket had been introduced which is made out of leaves and it decays within a time period of two weeks. There are environmental friendly products even in Sri Lanka but we do not pay necessary attention to use them.”

He said that this action will be taken in order to discourage the use of lunch sheets and rigifoam boxes that are non degradable. Premachandra also added that raids are being carried out to detect places which produce and sell polythene less than 20 microns, in thickness as they are already banned.
